The Republic of Austria has a long history of being conquered by other
empires and nations. Going all the way back to 15 B.C. when the Romans
invaded to Hitler's take over of Austria in 1938. Charlemagne, the Hapsburgs,
and the Congress of Vienna have all had a vested interest in this once
powerful and glorious nation. The Austrian Empire was changed into Austria-
Hungary in 1867 to give the unhappy minority groups some active roles in
their countries development. Not all minority groups were content. Which is
apparent in 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife
in Bosnia.
After World War I, which Austria was so eager to jump into, the once
powerful empire was reduced to its present day size and borders. This
change in Austria's parameters and power did not extinguish Adolf Hitler's
interest in making his birthplace the first nation to be annexed into the
Third Reich or the New German Empire just before World War II erupted.
Austria was restored to its independence and neutrality in 1955 after
occupation by the allies in 1945. Today Austria produces most of its own
food and some industrial products. The Socialists and the conservative
People's Party either alternate or share their power in ruling Austria.
Austria has access to free-trade areas in most of West Europe.
Kurt Waldheim, who was the UN Secretary General, won the presidential
elections in Austria despite links to the Nazis during World War II.
